What Should You Look For In An Ice Box?

LIDS Radiant overhead heat is the biggest ice killer! Is the lid double thickness? I.e. at least 75 mm thick. Many expensive ice boxes are still cost cutting with only single thickness lids of around 45 mm. Generally the lid needs to be around twice as thick as the walls to create an effective radiant barrier. Not much point having walls that are thicker than the lid! Techni Ice ice box lids are a minimum of 70 to 90 mm thick depending on the size.

BUNGS Is it a thread the same as common garden hose fitting so that water from ice can be drained away to slow the melting process down? Does it have a proper “O” rings seal? Techni Ice ice boxes feature both of these. (Some expensive ice boxes still have cheap rubber plugs)

ANCHOR POINTS Is the ice box fitted with separate anchor points to allow the unit to be tied down on roof racks or in trailers and boats? All techni ice ice boxes, 80L and above are fitted with re-enforced tie down points. These tie down points accommodate virtually any rope or tie down ratchet.

BASKETS? The problem with baskets is that most ice boxes that have them only have Single thickness lids. Reducing the lid thickness by half, just so you can hang a basket in the top is a big sacrifice in performance.

FEET Your ice box could spend a lot of time being dragged over all sorts of surfaces particularly when it is loaded and heavy. Commercial ice boxes have full length rubber skids underneath for this purpose. Techni Ice ice boxes even have white rubber skids so they can be dragged over the side of boats without marking them. Some quite expensive ice boxes still only have four rubber feet which can grab and drag mats and carpets in vehicles and eventually tear off altogether!!

HINGES The ideal hinges are either moulded or plastic welded. Some ice boxes still use pop rivets which are cheap and fast for production, but tend to pull through plastic eventually.

HANDLES Full length moulded ledge handles are the best option, why? Because they are comfortable and enable four people to carry a fully loaded ice box. Techni Ice ice boxes have these handles incorporated into the box, unlike single stub, plastic welded or pop riveted handles attached to the outer wall which can de-laminate the wall and eventually tear off with repeated use and heavy loads.

ICE RATING Many ice boxes have up to or maximum ice ratings but do they have a minimum ice rating? Techni Ice ice boxes have minimum ice ratings of 5 days and a max of 16 days. Most ice boxes do not even guarantee 2 day minimum.

GUARANTEE Is the ice box good enough to carry an unconditional 12 year guarantee? Techni Ice ice boxes are and currently come with the best guarantee in the industry.
